Creating Shared Value – Water Advocacy

What we’re doing today

Creating Shared Value recognizes that businesses must operate with environmental sustainability as a goal. Nestlé Waters North America works diligently in this area with a special focus on spring water resources. We believe that clean, high quality water is critical to human and environmental health.

Sustainable management of our spring sources is critical to local communities and our long-term success.

Our Processes and Testing

We employ specialized technology in our quality processes. We test 2,000 water samples each day, and our plants undergo annual inspections by outside third parties to ensure they meet safety regulations.

Quality Reporting

We lead our industry in quality testing and reporting and support disclosure of sources and quality reports. Since 2005, we have made quality reports available for all our bottled water brands.

Moving forward

We're committed to conducting our business in a way that is environmentally responsible and mindful of water and other natural resources we all depend on. We're focused on advancing our commitment to providing access to safe, clean water.

Be a leader in sustainable water stewardship practices

We recognize that good water resource management begins with how we select our spring sources, and continues in our approach to managing the sources sustainably and protecting watersheds.

Exceed regulatory requirements for quality and transparency

People need safe, quality water. They also deserve to know where their bottled water comes from, the process involved to ensure quality, and what’s in their water.

Advocate for water as essential to human and environmental health

Today, we get twice the calories from beverages as a generation ago. In light of the growing obesity and diabetes epidemics, promoting healthy hydration is critical. We are also educating young people through school programs about water stewardship.

Water for health

In the past 40 years, calories per capita from beverages have doubled to 226 daily. Indeed, half the calories that Americans have added to their diets are coming from beverages. Today, Americans are facing an obesity epidemic that threatens to reduce life expectancy and increase healthcare costs.

Nestlé Waters North America is committed to raising awareness and providing access to great tasting, high quality water through a wide variety of outlets. We often provide water at “high thirst” events from marathons and professional sporting events to local fairs, schools, and other community programs.

Help families meet their goals for better health.

What We're Doing Today

Nestlé Waters North America invests in research and educational materials to inform consumers about healthy beverage choices. In 2009, we introduced the Beverage Pyramid to doctors, nutritionists and consumers, based on research conducted by Dr. Barry Popkin and the Beverage Guidance Panel. Similar to the Food Pyramid, the Beverage Pyramid shows consumers how to achieve a healthy balance of calories from beverages and provides daily recommendations for each category, emphasizing the importance of including water in the mix.

What We're Doing Today

In 2010, we unveiled A Nestlé® Pure Life Pledge, which aimed to eliminate one billion calories from American families' diets. The pledge encouraged consumers to replace one sugared beverage daily with water and for each participating family, we made a $5 donation to Healthy Kids Challenge (up to $100,000). Our initial pledge goal was to have 10,000 families participate to eliminate one billion calories. But by the end of 2010, more than 59,000 people had taken the pledge. We want to keep this great momentum going, so starting in May 2011, we will be introducing the Nestlé Pure Life® Healthy Hydration Movement to help families continue to make healthy choices when it comes to their beverages.
